This week we had the age old challenge of eradicating rats from our customers back garden. It was evident that rats were visiting to sample all the goodies in the compost bin. The first rule of Pest Control is to identify a food source. Then remove or protect it.
Access was being made by burrowing through the soft earth up into the bin. Many customers at this point have a dilema. The need to compost versus the fear of attracting rats. We are very much champions of composting.
Nothing is better than the smell of fresh compost on a Sunday morning in the allotment. However the simple design of composters with open bottoms to allow worm access is also its down fall.
Many people opt for building a concrete base to stand the composter on. I would argue that this defeats the natural cycle of things that makes composting such an enjoyable thing to do. Our solution is simple. Proof the bottom of the bin with a rodent mesh. This can be fitted inside the bin as we have done here, or could be laid on the ground and the bin positioned on top. We can help you with this if you would like.
Choose a mesh that is tight enough to keep out both rats and mice. The mesh wont last for ever, but you will get a good few years out of it before it needs replacing. Problem solved! Of course always remeber to keep a good tight fitting lid closed at all times.
